Introducing DHIS2 Insight

Analytics that speak your language — now live on YaLIM Cloud

New on YaLIM Cloud

Today we're launching DHIS2 Insight — a natural-language analytics assistant for your DHIS2 data. Instead of building reports or writing SQL, you simply ask a question in plain English or French, and Insight returns a chart, a data table, the exact SQL it used, and a plain-language explanation with recommendations.

It's built for the people who make decisions — program managers, M&E officers, district supervisors, data managers — not just the people who administer the database. It's live now at insight.yalim.cloud.

Why it's different

Plenty of tools promise "AI analytics." Most hide how they got the number. Insight does the opposite — it shows its work, and it keeps the number honest.

The number never depends on the AI. Data-quality metrics — completeness, outliers, consistency — are computed with deterministic SQL, reproducible to the digit. The AI's job is to turn your question into that SQL, draw the chart, and explain what it means. Two runs give the same result, so you can confidently put an Insight answer in an official report.

What can you ask?

Insight is trained for routine health-information questions and for the WHO data-quality dimensions in particular:

What you want to know Just ask
Completeness "What is the reporting completeness of each facility?"
Stopped reporting "Which facilities stopped reporting in the last two months?"
Missing data "Which facilities did not report some months?"
Outliers "Find outliers in malaria cases"
Sudden changes "Show month-over-month changes above 100%"
Internal consistency "Where is the 4th ANC visit greater than the 1st?"
Impossible values "Are there any negative values?"  ·  "Which facilities report zero repeatedly?"
General analytics "Top 10 data elements by total value"  ·  "Trend of assisted deliveries by district"
🌐 Bilingual: ask in English or French — Insight understands both, and answers in the language you used.

Availability — which plans include Insight

DHIS2 Insight is included with paid plans. Each plan sets a monthly query allowance and the number of team seats:

Plan Insight Queries / month Team seats
Base Not included 1
Premium ✓ Included 500 5
Enterprise ✓ Included 5,000 10
Custom ✓ Included variable variable

Allowances reset automatically at the start of each month (UTC). There is no overage billing — when you reach your cap you simply wait for the next period, or upgrade your plan.

👥 Seats for your analysts. From the API Keys page in the portal you can create Insight sub-users — API-key-only seats for analysts who need Insight but not a full portal login. Their key is generated and emailed to them automatically.

How to set it up

Insight is a simple 3-step wizard at insight.yalim.cloud. Here's the whole setup, start to finish.

1. Get your API key

In the YaLIM Cloud portal, open API Keys and copy your key — it starts with ymcp_. (Or create an Insight sub-user for an analyst and use the key they are emailed.)

2. Open Insight and authenticate

Go to insight.yalim.cloud, paste your ymcp_ key into Step 1 — API Key Authentication, and click Authenticate. You'll see your username, role, plan and namespace confirmed.

3. Connect your DHIS2 instance

In Step 2 — Connect DHIS2 Instance, fill in:

  • Instance ID — a short label, e.g. demo
  • DHIS2 Base URL — e.g. https://dhis2.example.org
  • Authentication method — Personal Access Token (recommended) or Password
  • Analytics period — e.g. Last 12 Months
  • Org unit levels — e.g. 1,2,3

Then click Connect.

💡 Recommended: use a Personal Access Token (PAT). Create it in DHIS2 under Profile → Personal access tokens and paste the d2pat_... value. A PAT needs no username, can be scoped to read-only, and can be revoked without changing your password.

4. Sync your data

Click Sync Data. Insight pulls your DHIS2 analytics into a fast, local column store. A first sync of a large instance can take a while — the on-screen timer keeps counting so you know it's working.

5. Train the model

Click Train Model. Insight learns your data elements, indicators and org-unit hierarchy so it understands your vocabulary — not just generic DHIS2 terms.

6. Ask your first question

Step 3 — Ask Questions unlocks. Type a question in plain language and click Ask. That's it.

How a question flows:
Your question (plain language)
  ↓ translated into SQL
Deterministic SQL on your synced analytics
  ↓
Chart + data table + explanation + recommendations

What you get in every answer

A plain-language explanation of what the numbers show

An interactive chart — bar, line or indicator

The generated SQL — expand it, audit it, copy it

A data table of the underlying results

Actionable recommendations — e.g. a ready-to-use follow-up list of facilities to contact

Thumbs up / down feedback that helps Insight improve

Try these first

"What is the reporting completeness of each facility?"
"Which facilities stopped reporting in the last two months?"
"Find outliers in malaria cases"
"Where is the 4th ANC visit greater than the 1st?"
"Top 10 data elements by total value this year"

Choose your AI mode: Sovereign or Performance

Insight lets you pick the language model behind the scenes — and switch at any time from the AI Model card in the web UI. Changes apply instantly, no restart.

  Sovereign Mode (default) Performance Mode
Model Local, in-cluster Hosted API (OpenAI-compatible)
Data leaving the cluster None Aggregated figures + metadata labels only
Best for Sensitive data, sovereignty requirements Faster answers, broader question coverage

The data-quality numbers are identical in both modes — they're computed in SQL, not by the model. The mode only affects how fluently unusual questions are turned into SQL, and the narrative explanation.

Tips for great answers

  • Be specific. Name the period, the org-unit level, and the indicator or dataset — e.g. "malaria cases by district, last 12 months."
  • Audit the SQL. If a number surprises you, expand the generated SQL — it shows exactly how the result was computed.
  • Insight knows its limits. It won't invent a metric it can't compute. For example, timeliness isn't derivable from the synced analytics, so it answers with completeness instead of guessing.
  • Mind the latency. In Sovereign mode the local model is GPU-accelerated, but a complex question can still take a few minutes; Performance mode is faster.
  • Give feedback. Thumbs up / down on each answer helps us prioritise improvements.
🔒 Security & privacy
Strict tenant isolation — your namespace is a hard boundary. Insight only ever sees instances you own, verified against the portal.
Scoped API key — your ymcp_ key grants access to your space only.
Sovereign by default — in Sovereign mode your data never leaves the cluster.
Auditable numbers — deterministic SQL means reproducible, citable results.

DHIS2 Insight is live now on YaLIM Cloud. Open it, connect your instance, and ask your first question — no SQL, no reports to build.
